Detours: Tahoe City is brought to you by North Tahoe Arts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to support the arts in the North Tahoe-Truckee communities through exposure, education and participation. www.northtahoearts.com. Jane Jenny is an installation artist herself and has organized two other ‘Detours’ exhibitions; one in Venice Beach, CA and a second located in downtown Los Angeles. She describes her commitment to this particular genre of art making as a labor of love. Jane lives half time in Carnelian Bay and often volunteers around town including directing and teaching at Kid’s Art Camp at Rideout Community Center.
Although installation art is not very new, it took art outside the two-dimensional space of painting and brought it into real space. It’s history can be traced back to the time of Marcel Duchamp, the father of conceptual art in the early 1900’s. On a slightly different level, site-specific installation art takes into account the ‘place’ or context where the work is installed including but not limited to the history, the inhabitants, the myths, the architecture, the environment, etc. This is the first exhibit of this kind to hit the streets of Tahoe City and the folks around town are very excited! This project is suitable for all ages and will offer some exciting and interesting ways of looking at art for both tourists and locals alike.
There is a concurrent reception the same night at North Tahoe Arts located at 380 N. Lake Blvd. You can pick up a map there, or at the Visitors Center next door.
